During our recent webinar, hosted in partnership with MuleSoft, the speakers discussed new challenges in healthcare brought or highlighted by the crisis and how the API-led integration can address them.
There is a clear trend in healthcare towards opening up and sharing information not only within organisations but also with the external partners. Why are the organisations struggling to share their data?
During the webinar, we ran a poll, which confirmed that siloed systems are among the top challenges faced by IT teams. Most of our attendees have already identified that the only way forward is to leverage the technology to cooperate and share information.

"Do you embrace innovation and change? Are you willing to test new models of healthcare in the digital age?", - David Wilde

Our first speaker David Wilde has extensive experience across the public sector, spanning central and local government and healthcare. He looked at the challenges for organisations moving to citizen-centred healthcare and how technology can help residents live healthier and independent lives for longer and on their terms. The healthcare ecosystem covers primary care, acute care, mental health, public health and social care, comprising thousands of organisations across the Public, Private and Not for Profit sectors. Is it any wonder it’s challenging for providers to move to resident centred delivery?

Structures, rules and budgets shouldn’t be the blockers though. Providers must gain and sustain residents trust through transparency and informed consent. Through collaboration they must also embrace innovation and be brave enough to test the new models of healthcare that support independence, promote healthier living and eliminate failure demand driven by duplication, redirection and partial solutions.

Interoperability and integration across large and complex technology landscapes can unlock resident centred service delivery if we put this at the centre of our thinking.

"The time for NHS  to change isn't sometime in the future but it's actually now", - Hugh Williams

Our next speaker, Huw Williams is the strategic account manager for healthcare at MuleSoft. MuleSoft is the only organisation in the top right-hand corner for API management and integrations in the Gartner Magic Quadrant. Their enterprise platform for designing, developing and managing both APIs and integrations was created to help customers change and to innovate faster. When 80% of costs are currently spent on keeping the lights on and not innovating that becomes pretty important. An additional benefit for healthcare organisations using MuleSoft is the recent release of Healthcare Accelerators which is designed to help developers build healthcare projects much faster thus save time and cost.

Huw used the NSW Health Pathology (Australia) case study to demonstrate how APIs can be reused to accelerate the development of the other services and assets. The NSW Health Pathology has been working with MuleSoft for over 4 years. During this time they have built an extensive library of APIs and microservices for connecting their laboratory information management systems to a myriad of eHRs (electronic health records). These systems then shared information with the Australian federal systems, including My Health Record and the national cancer screening registry.

When the crisis started, the NSW Health Pathology were in a very 'healthy' technology state. Bu reusing their APIs, they were able to create and launch some specific COVID-19 public-facing services within only 2 weeks. On these services was released in the first week of the pandemic to get test data back to their patients within 24 hours.

Huw Williams presents the MuleSoft API-led integration platform and a few interesting case studies.

"How to start? A common mistake is to replaced all point-to-point integrations with APIs , lifted-and-shifted one mess into the other platform", - Vikram Setia

Our last speaker, Vikram Setia, co-founder of Informentum, talked about how to get started with the API-integration innovation.
He introduced our unique 90-day Integration Framework designed to help organisations avoid common mistakes and achieve fast results. It's crucial to approach the integration programme in stages and ensure that strict guidelines and foundations are in place. Vikram explained the activities and outcomes of all stages mapped by the framework as well as presented a quicker, project-led approach to kick-starting integration programmes which allows rapping the benefits event faster!

Although Vikram explained how the framework was used by healthcare organisations, it can successfully be leveraged by companies in other industries.
